Berlin's Maria-Leo-Grundschule Wins Prestigious 2025 German School Prize
Berlin's Maria-Leo-Grundschule, led by principal Sandra Scheffel, has been awarded the prestigious 2025 German School Prize. The school received the honour, worth 100,000 euros, from Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier at a ceremony in Berlin on September 30, 2025.
The award recognises the school's exceptional quality in teaching, achievement, diversity handling, responsibility, school climate, and learning school features. Maria-Leo-Grundschule was chosen from over 100 applicants.
The school stands out for its innovative learning house principle. Each floor offers independent learning spaces, with multiprofessional teams supporting students. The learning workshops open early, allowing children to start at their own pace and work on tailored tasks. The school's unique approach caters to the diverse needs and talents of its pupils, earning it the nickname 'the village'.
Five other schools also received recognition, each awarded 30,000 euros. These include the Schule An der Burgweide in Hamburg, Evangelische Gesamtschule Gelsenkirchen-Bismarck in NRW, Questenberg-Grundschule Meißen in Saxony, Jenaplanschule Weimar in Thuringia, and the Deutsche Internationale Schule in Tbilisi.
The German School Prize, awarded since 2006, continues to highlight outstanding educational institutions. Maria-Leo-Grundschule's win demonstrates the success of its unique learning approach and commitment to diversity. The prize money will support further development and improvement at the school.
