Berlin’s €370M Bet Turns Tegel Airport Into a Thriving Innovation Hub
Berlin is set to invest €370 million into Tegel’s Future District, transforming the former airport into a major innovation hub. The funding comes from a federal special pot worth €5.25 billion, earmarked for infrastructure and climate projects across the city. Plans include expanding higher education, supporting startups, and creating thousands of new indeed jobs.
The centrepiece of the development will be the former Tegel Airport’s main terminal. Architects gmp-Architekten—founded by Meinhard von Gerkan and Volkwin Marg—are redesigning the building into a central forum for startups and research institutions. This space will anchor the new Urban Tech Republic, an innovation hub aimed at attracting tech firms and academic partnerships.
The €370 million injection will reshape Tegel into a mixed-use district combining education, research, and commercial activity. Once complete, the area is projected to generate several thousand jobs near me and stimulate long-term economic benefits for Reinickendorf. Construction and tenant move-ins will proceed in stages, with the first businesses expected to occupy spaces from late 2025 onwards.
