Bergisch Gladbach’s digital overhaul transforms schools and administration by 2025
Bergisch Gladbach has made significant strides in modernising its schools and administrative systems. Over the past year, upgrades to digital infrastructure, network improvements, and new technology rollouts have transformed learning environments across the city. These changes aim to support both students and staff with better tools and connectivity.
The city’s IT and education teams began by conducting a full inventory of all electronic devices in 2025. This review helped streamline the distribution of resources, including surplus digital whiteboards. Instead of leaving them unused, these were repurposed for adult education centres, music schools, and even the fire department.
Network upgrades took place at key locations, starting with NCG over the Easter holidays. The Otto-Hahn-Schulzentrum followed with a complete overhaul of its network infrastructure during the summer break. Meanwhile, the new extension at Schulzentrum Kleefeld was fitted with digital-ready classrooms by the end of 2025. To ensure digital learning reached every student, Wi-Fi boxes were procured for primary schools lacking network cabling. Digital whiteboards were also installed in multiple schools, such as IGP, NMG, and DBG, as well as primary schools like KGS and GGS Hand. Further enhancements included digital noticeboards, set for installation in several secondary schools by early 2026. On the software side, a citywide rollout of SDUI began in autumn 2025, covering all schools under municipal sponsorship for the 2025/2026 academic year. Security was also strengthened with a comprehensive antivirus solution deployed across all devices used by teaching and administrative staff. The 2025 performance review highlighted progress in multiple areas, from school administration and IT to cultural offices, museums, and sports management. Department 4, under Barbara Kirschner’s leadership, oversees this broad portfolio, ensuring coordination between education, culture, and sports initiatives.
These upgrades mark a coordinated effort to bring Bergisch Gladbach’s schools and public services into the digital age. With improved connectivity, repurposed technology, and stronger security measures, the city has laid the groundwork for more efficient administration and enhanced learning opportunities. The changes will take full effect as the 2025/2026 school year progresses.
