Belarus boosts state-funded university spots for teaching and medical programs in 2024
Belarus has expanded state-funded university places for 2024, focusing on high-demand fields. Medical and teaching programs have seen the biggest increases, with adjustments based on labour market needs. Several institutions have also removed paid tuition options for key courses.
Belarusian State Pedagogical University (BSPU) has added 1,094 state-funded spots for full-time teacher training. The most popular programs include Special and Inclusive Education, Preschool Education, Primary Education, and Physics and Mathematics Education. An extra 282 places are now available for part-time teacher training.
Medical universities have shifted entirely to state-funded admissions for full-time programs. This year, 760 new state-funded slots were introduced, replacing 200 paid places from last year. The quota for targeted medical admissions now varies between 40% and 70%, depending on specialty demand. At Belarusian State Technological University, 12 of its 35 programs now offer only state-funded admission. Among them is the newly launched Design and Technology of Unmanned Aerial Systems. The allocation of places follows data from the Ministry of Labour and employer surveys to match workforce needs.
The changes reflect a push to align higher education with job market requirements. Medical and teaching fields have gained the most state support, while some universities have phased out tuition fees for certain programs. Official figures for the total number of new state-funded places across all four fields remain unavailable.
