Belarus ballet theatre accused of stealing Chagall-inspired production concept

A dispute has emerged over a planned ballet about artist Marc Chagall at the Belarus National Academic Grand Opera and Ballet Theatre. Choreographer Gabyshau claims the production, now set for 2026, was his original concept—yet the theatre moved forward without his involvement. The row centres on meetings, sketches, and a script he developed over 18 months before the official announcement.

Gabyshau first pitched his ballet, Chagall: Palette Over the City, to the theatre’s leadership a year and a half ago. He later travelled to Minsk, meeting director Katsiaryna Dulava and principal ballet master Ihar Kolb in person. There, he presented a detailed libretto, visual sketches, and a rare Chagall drawing of an upside-down village as inspiration. The theatre responded positively but requested further materials: costume designs, set plans, and a full budget. They also noted their 2025 schedule was full, leaving 2026 'under consideration'.

The concept included a plotless grand pas titled The Ceiling, blending Chagall’s vibrant palette with Belarusian folklore and Jewish melodies. Gabyshau refined the proposal and sent a complete presentation. Days later, however, friends alerted him to the theatre’s public announcement: a 2026 Chagall ballet, staged by Ihar Kolb.

Kolb, a Honored Artist of Russia, returned to Minsk in 2022 after decades abroad. His career began at this very theatre in the mid-1990s, following his graduation from the Belarusian State Choreographic College. Though celebrated for his technical skill, his recent productions—including Boleró and The Nutcracker—drew sharp criticism from audiences. Gabyshau now argues that the theatre adopted his vision without credit, leaving him sidelined from the project he originated.

The Belarusian theatre has scheduled the Chagall ballet for 2026, with Kolb attached as choreographer. Gabyshau’s detailed proposals, including sketches and a script, formed the foundation of the announced production. No public statement has addressed his claims of exclusion or the origins of the ballet’s concept.
