Bangladesh's BNP takes power after historic election shift
Bangladesh has entered a new political era after the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) secured victory in the 13th parliamentary election. Tarique Rahman now leads as prime minister, ending over a decade of rule by the Awami League. The shift brings fresh challenges, from economic ties with major partners to the ongoing Rohingya refugee crisis.
The BNP's rise follows widespread protests in August 2024, which set the stage for their expected election win in early 2026. Under the Awami League (2008–2024), Bangladesh had deepened cooperation with India, signing agreements on energy, transit, and security. But recent demonstrations included anti-India slogans, accusations of media interference, and reports of suspects fleeing to India. Despite the political change, no immediate revisions have been made to existing deals like the 2015 border treaty.
The new government must also navigate relations with China, a key economic ally. Beijing's investments in transport, energy, and industrial zones have driven growth, yet concerns remain over debt levels and long-term dependence. Dhaka aims to balance economic gains with policy independence.
Meanwhile, the Rohingya crisis persists, with over one million refugees straining resources and complicating diplomacy. The US remains vital for Bangladesh's garment exports, but stronger ties depend on progress in governance, labour rights, and judicial reforms. Improved transparency and civil liberties could boost investor confidence and trade opportunities.
The BNP's leadership faces immediate tests in maintaining stability, strengthening institutions, and managing foreign relations. Legal cases against former officials and Sheikh Hasina's presence in India add to the uncertainty. How Dhaka handles these issues will shape its economic future and regional standing.
