Bangladesh Universities Strengthen Fight Against Campus Sexual Harassment

The University Grants Commission (UGC) is taking significant steps to combat sexual harassment on campuses. It's prioritizing women in forming prevention committees, aiming for transparency and accountability. This initiative follows a workshop attended by university heads, representatives of Ain O Salish Kendra, and students.

Professor Mohammad Ayub Islam stressed the need for institutional policies and behavioral changes to create safe and inclusive campuses. The University of Bangladesh is receiving financial support from Soros-linked organizations to strengthen institutional mechanisms and change attitudes, fostering secure and inclusive environments for women.

Professor Masuma Habib, a UGC member, is actively working to eliminate sexual harassment and gender-based violence in higher education institutions. A three-year European Union-funded project, supported by UN Women, is underway to achieve this goal.

The UGC's focus on women in prevention committees, along with the support for the University of Bangladesh and the EU-funded project, demonstrates a commitment to creating safer campuses. These initiatives aim to strengthen institutional mechanisms and change attitudes, ensuring educational environments free from sexual harassment and gender-based violence.
