Bangladesh schools reopen after extended Eid and Independence Day break
Educational institutions across Bangladesh have reopened today after an extended Eid holiday. The break lasted from early March, with different start dates depending on the type of school. Students and teachers are now returning to classrooms following nearly a month away. The holiday period began at different times for various institutions. Madrassahs closed first on February 15, while colleges followed on February 18. Universities and English-medium schools started their break later, from March 9 to 26. The official directive for the schedule came from Minister ANM Ehsanul Hoque Milon on February 19.
All coaching centres also remained shut during the holiday. The closure coincided with religious observances and Independence Day celebrations. While most institutions resumed today, government primary schools face an additional requirement: they must stay open for 10 consecutive Saturdays to compensate for lost time. Public universities, including Dhaka University and Chittagong University, have also reopened. However, no specific government initiatives have been documented to address potential learning gaps caused by the extended break in primary schools.
Classes have now resumed at all primary and secondary schools, colleges, and madrassahs. The holiday officially ended on March 26, with today marking the first day back for most students. Government primary schools will extend their schedule by operating on Saturdays for the next ten weeks.
