Bangladesh Medical University unveils first MD in emergency medicine
Bangladesh Medical University (BMU) has launched a new MD course in emergency medicine. The programme was officially introduced during an inaugural meeting held at Shaheed Dr Milton Hall in Dhaka on Saturday.
Several high-ranking officials attended the event, including the university's vice-chancellor and senior health directors.
The meeting was led by BMU vice-chancellor Professor Dr Md Shahinul Alam. Alongside him were key university figures, such as pro-VC for administration Professor Dr Md Abul Kalam Azad and pro-VC for research and development Professor Dr Md Mujibur Rahman Howlader. The registrar, Professor Dr Md Nazrul Islam, and treasurer Professor Dr Nahrin Akhtar were also present.
Representatives from the Directorate of Health attended as well. These included director general Professor Dr Prabhat Chandra Biswas and health education director general Professor Dr Md Nazmul Hossain. Associate professor Dr Reza Ali, a senior staff specialist in emergency medicine at the University of Western Sydney, Australia, delivered the keynote address. He shared insights on the importance of specialised training in emergency care. Despite the launch, no official doctors or specialists have yet been publicly named or recruited as trainers for the new Master's programme.
The new MD course marks a step toward expanding emergency medicine training in Bangladesh. The university has not yet announced who will lead or teach the programme. Further details on faculty appointments are expected in due course.
