Survey: School Leaders See Relief in Teacher Shortage - Baden-Württemberg’s teacher shortage eases but remains a critical challenge
The teacher shortage in Baden-Württemberg has shown signs of improvement in recent years. At the start of the current school year, the average number of unfilled teaching positions dropped to 0.6, down from 1.1 in 2022. Despite this progress, staffing remains a pressing issue for many schools in the region.
For years, schools in Baden-Württemberg have struggled with chronic staff shortages. The problem has consistently topped the list of concerns for headteachers, with nearly half still naming it their biggest challenge. Yet, the latest figures suggest a slight recovery compared to previous years.
At the beginning of the new academic year, schools in the state reported an average of 1.4 full-time teaching vacancies per institution. While this number remains significant, it reflects a better position than the national average. Optimism among school principals has also grown, with 55 percent now anticipating severe shortages in the future—a notable drop from 81 percent in 2022.
The easing of shortages has brought cautious relief, though the issue continues to dominate discussions in education circles. Headteachers remain vigilant, as the demand for qualified teachers still outpaces supply in many areas.
The decline in unfilled teaching roles points to gradual improvement in Baden-Württemberg’s education sector. With fewer principals expecting extreme shortages, the outlook appears more stable than in previous years. However, the challenge of recruiting and retaining teachers persists as a key issue for schools across the state.
