Auckland's March Madness brings traffic to a near standstill on key routes
Auckland is experiencing its busiest traffic period of the year as March Madness takes hold. Students returning to school and increased work activity have led to severe congestion, with public transport use also hitting record levels. Data from Auckland Transport reveals just how slow some of the city's key routes have become during peak hours.
The worst delays were recorded on Manukau Rd/Broadway and Ponsonby Rd/Newton Rd at 8am, where average speeds dropped to just 8km/h. Raleigh Rd/Lake Rd fared little better, with vehicles crawling at 9km/h and a travel time of 8.2 minutes. Even the fastest morning routes, Albany Highway and St Lukes Rd, only reached an average of 15km/h—well below their speed limits.
Auckland Transport identified 16 of the city's most congested roads using February data. While some areas saw slight improvements by 5pm, Ponsonby Rd/Newton Rd remained heavily clogged, with speeds stuck at 9km/h and a 6.21-minute travel time. Associate Professor Doug Wilson from the University of Auckland blames the gridlock on a 'supply and demand problem,' with too many cars competing for limited road space. He proposes long-term solutions like investing in transport infrastructure, encouraging alternatives to driving, and introducing congestion charges. However, no government measures currently support behavioural changes through time-of-use charging fees. Public transport has also seen a surge, with last week marking the busiest period of the year so far. Auckland Transport director Stacey van der Putten confirmed the spike in usage, highlighting the strain on both roads and transit systems.
The current congestion highlights ongoing challenges in Auckland's transport network. With March Madness pushing speeds well below limits and public transport at peak demand, the city faces pressure to address traffic flow. Experts suggest infrastructure upgrades and demand management could ease future bottlenecks.
