In a significant stride towards nurturing the next generation of environmental stewards, the urban ecosanctuary ZEALANDIA, in partnership with WWF New Zealand, has developed a comprehensive teaching resource to help schools explore the concept of a pest-free New Zealand.

Lesson Plans and Activities

The resource, available for download, includes a series of lesson plans focused on students actively contributing to a pest-free New Zealand. The plans cover two main elements: analyzing examples and gathering data, and collecting and displaying data to analyze for real-world outcomes.

One of the engaging activities is "Making a Tracking Tunnel," where students monitor the presence of pest species in a neighboring gully or their school grounds. Another activity, "Observation: learning to see," emphasizes the importance of careful observation in science.

In "Mapping the Future," students explore changes that have taken place in their local environment in the last 50-100 years and plan for the next 50 years, fostering a sense of responsibility towards the environment.

Schools in the Wellington region can access ZEALANDIA's free Outreach programme by contacting [email protected]. The lesson plans series includes an overview, five individual lessons, and an emphasis on the importance of understanding how living organisms interact and effectively targeting pest species in conservation efforts.

Support from WWF New Zealand

WWF New Zealand offers valuable support to schools, providing educational resources, expert advice, and guidance for developing curriculum-aligned lesson plans focused on environmental conservation. Participation in WWF-led campaigns can raise awareness about the importance of pest control and biodiversity conservation among students, teachers, and the broader community.

By integrating the concept of kaitiakitanga (guardianship of the environment) into lesson plans, schools can instill a deep respect for the natural world in their students, encouraging them to take action in protecting New Zealand's biodiversity.

Collaborative projects with local conservation groups and WWF New Zealand can address specific environmental issues, such as invasive species management or habitat preservation, providing students with hands-on experience in conservation efforts.

Making a Difference

By integrating conservation and environmental education into their curricula, schools can play a significant role in contributing to a pest-free New Zealand. The resources provided by ZEALANDIA and WWF New Zealand offer a unique opportunity for schools to empower their students and inspire them to become future guardians of the environment.

For more information, visit ZEALANDIA's Can We Make New Zealand Pest Free? resource page, which contains all downloadable resources on one page. The Predator Free New Zealand Trust also provides information on getting involved at an individual or community level for local conservation efforts.

WWF is a global conservation organization with a 50-year history of protecting the future of nature. By supporting and utilizing these resources, schools can help ensure a sustainable future for all living organisms in New Zealand.

  1. The comprehensive teaching resource developed by ZEALANDIA and WWF New Zealand encourages active student contribution towards a pest-free New Zealand, focusing on environmental science, climate-change, and learning through activities like "Making a Tracking Tunnel" and "Mapping the Future".
  2. Through valuable support from WWF New Zealand, schools can integrate kaitiakitanga (guardianship of the environment) into their lessons, fostering a deep respect for the natural world and inspiring students to become future environmental stewards through curriculum-aligned lesson plans and collaboration with local conservation groups.
  3. Incorporating online education resources from institutions such as ZEALANDIA and WWF New Zealand can help enable students to understand the impact of pest species and effective conservation techniques, contributing to the larger goal of a pest-free New Zealand and ensuring a sustainable future for all living organisms in New Zealand.
