Almaty's Civil Defense Day puts crisis skills to the test on March 1

World Civil Defense Day returns on March 1, marking its 33rd year since its establishment in 1990. This year, Almaty's emergency services will host a public exhibition to highlight their skills and equipment. The main event invites both locals and visitors to experience firsthand how the city prepares for crises.

The exhibition will take place at Astana Square on March 1, 2023, running from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM. Organisers have arranged a wide display of emergency response tools, including 50 specialised vehicles and 150 trained personnel from various civil defense teams.

Attendees can test an earthquake simulator mounted on a mobile platform. The setup will mimic real seismic conditions, offering a practical sense of how tremors feel. Nearby, a fully equipped field hospital will operate, complete with a surgical unit for live demonstrations of medical and trauma care.

Hands-on workshops will also feature prominently. Participants can practise emergency techniques on medical mannequins, which will simulate severe injuries like open fractures. The goal is to familiarise the public with basic life-saving procedures while showcasing the expertise of Almaty's responders.

The event aims to strengthen public awareness of civil defense measures in Almaty. By providing direct access to equipment and training, organisers hope to build confidence in the city's emergency preparedness. Residents and guests can attend free of charge during the scheduled hours.
