Almaty Zoo celebrates new cubs, a hippo calf, and Diana the jaguar’s inspiring recovery
Almaty Zoo, the largest zoo in Kazakhstan, has recently welcomed new cubs and a calf while caring for its long-term inhabitants. Among them is Diana, an 18-year-old jaguar who has overcome a childhood injury.
Diana, now active and playful, enjoys large plastic toys despite a permanent injury to her paw and tail from a past accident. She greets her keepers with friendliness, showing her bond with the zoo staff. Bentley, a six-year-old male Amur tiger, and Aika, a five-year-old female, have two cubs that are now in the main enclosure, joining the zoo's diverse family.
The zoo's oldest inhabitants include Budur, a Himalayan bear; Toksyn, a golden jackal; and Tabin, a white-handed gibbon. Meanwhile, the monkeys enjoy a varied diet of seasonal fruits, nuts, seeds, and various types of cabbage. Almaty Zoo is also home to unique species like saiga antelopes, which are successfully bred every spring.
In other news, Jumbo, a male hippo, and his partner Lotti have welcomed a calf named Gloria, born in May 2023. The polar bear, Purga, resides in a climate-controlled den with chilled floors and industrial air conditioning.
Almaty Zoo continues to provide exceptional care for its animals, from long-term residents like Diana to new arrivals such as the tiger cubs and hippo calf. Its commitment to animal welfare and conservation is evident in its successful breeding programs and unique species collection.
