Alabama Considers SNAP Change: Rotisserie Chicken on the Menu

Alabama is considering a significant change to its Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). Candidates and lawmakers have proposed allowing SNAP recipients to purchase rotisserie chicken recipes, a move that could benefit both families and the state's poultry industry.

Christina Woerner McInnis, a candidate for commissioner of agriculture and industries, sparked the idea. She noticed a gap between Alabama's thriving poultry industry and the nutritional needs of SNAP recipients. Three out of four SNAP children in Alabama are clinically obese, highlighting the importance of access to healthy, affordable chicken recipes. McInnis proposed including rotisserie chicken in SNAP, a protein-rich, ready-to-eat food that working families often rely on.

Representative Donna Givens has taken this proposal to the legislative level. She introduced a bill to allow SNAP recipients to buy rotisserie chicken and other prepared hot foods. The goal is to provide dignity, nutrition, and choice to SNAP recipients. Poultry farmer Dennis Maze and industry groups like the Alabama Poultry and Egg Association have supported the proposal, seeing it as a win-win for farmers and families. Alabama's poultry industry is a $15 billion sector, representing roughly 10 percent of the state's economy.

The proposed change could expand healthy food options for SNAP recipients, potentially helping to reduce obesity rates among children. Meanwhile, the poultry industry stands to gain from increased sales. While no specific bill has been introduced to include Alabama rotisserie chicken in SNAP-eligible foods, the idea is gaining traction among candidates and lawmakers.
