Air Canada Strike Causes Thousands of Flight Cancellations, Disrupts Travel Worldwide

Air Canada's operations have been severely disrupted by a strike led by the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), affecting thousands of travelers worldwide. The strike, over pay and scheduling issues, has resulted in over 2,500 flight cancellations, including at major airports like Toronto Pearson, Vancouver, and Montreal-Trudeau. Federal Transport Minister Pablo Rodriguez has urged both sides to reach a swift agreement.

The Canada Industrial Relations Board has ordered Air Canada and CUPE to enter emergency arbitration, aiming to resolve the dispute promptly. CUPE's national president, Mark Hancock, has criticized Air Canada for not addressing frontline workers' concerns, stating that the company has failed to provide fair compensation for flight attendants' ground duties, which are currently unpaid. Travelers have reported long waits, limited support services, and inconsistent communication from Air Canada during the strike.

Air Canada has confirmed that regular service may not resume until a resolution is reached through binding arbitration. The company's domestic and transatlantic schedules have been significantly disrupted, with Air Canada's president, Michael Rousseau, stating that the strike has caused 'significant operational and financial consequences'.

The ongoing strike has highlighted long-standing issues between Air Canada and its flight attendants, with CUPE seeking equitable compensation for ground duties. Both parties have been ordered to enter emergency arbitration, with the federal government urging a swift resolution to minimize further disruption to travelers.
