Aid for the prospective Special Olympics in Bavaria 2025, set to save lives
The Special Olympics Bavarian State Games (SOBY) 2025 took place in Erlangen from July 14 to July 18, 2025, marking the largest inclusive sporting event of the year in Bavaria for athletes with intellectual and multiple disabilities.
The event, officially recognised by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), served as a platform to promote inclusion, diversity, and equality through sport. A total of 1,332 athletes with intellectual disabilities, 143 unified partners (athletes without disabilities, participating in inclusive sports), and 507 coaches and trainers participated, making it the biggest SOBY event to date.
The SOBY 2025 featured a wide range of sports, including swimming, football, table tennis, and new disciplines like roller skating. The games commenced with the opening ceremony on July 14 at the Kulturinsel Wöhrmühle. The closing event was an athlete's disco on the town hall square in Erlangen.
One local organisation, Lebenshilfe Fürth, proudly participated in the SOBY, fielding 21 athletes from the Dambacher workshops and Hallemann School. Sparkasse Fürth contributed to the active participation of these athletes by donating 3,000 Euro for the purchase of sports equipment and training measures.
The event was supported by high-profile ambassadors, including Tobias Angerer (former cross-country skier), H.R.H. Leopold Prince of Bavaria, Lucas Bögl (cross-country skier), Christian Neureuther and Miriam Neureuther (former ski racer and biathlete), and Steffen Weinhold (handball player).
The Special Olympics movement aims to increase recognition, self-confidence, and social participation for people with intellectual disabilities, using sport as a tool for inclusion and empowerment. The mayor of Erlangen emphasised the unifying power of the games and their role in breaking down barriers and celebrating diversity.
Enthusiasts were invited to cheer on the athletes and experience the unique atmosphere of the games up close. All events of the SOBY 2025 were free and open to the public, making it an accessible and inclusive event for all. International guests from Italy, Austria, Poland, and Switzerland also participated in the SOBY 2025, further emphasising its importance as a significant event for promoting diversity and inclusion.
