Amanda Bickerstaff, the CEO of AI for Education and the founder of the Women in AI Education Community, has shared four key tips for successful AI adoption in schools. Bickerstaff, who will be speaking about AI at Tech & Learning's EdExec Summit, emphasises the importance of responsible AI adoption in education, stating that it requires a team effort involving students, families, and communities.

Creating Responsible Guidelines

Bickerstaff recommends creating a set of responsible guidelines aligned with the school system’s mission and vision. These guidelines should include guardrails and spaces for open inquiry and experimentation with AI to understand its educational impact. Blocking students from using AI is not practical, especially when colleges are requiring AI use and students are already using it.

Developing an AI Literacy Plan

Bickerstaff believes that equipping people with AI literacy is crucial for understanding the value and potential benefits of AI. She recommends developing an AI literacy plan that encompasses all stakeholders—educators, leaders, students, and the broader community—to ensure widespread understanding and ability to engage with AI responsibly.

Establishing an AI Committee

To build capacity and lead AI initiatives within the school, Bickerstaff advises creating an AI committee composed of diverse members from different departments and backgrounds, not just early adopters. Bickerstaff notes a gender disparity in AI usage, with approximately 20% more men adopting these tools, even in education. She believes that giving young women the opportunity to see themselves in positive AI professionals is important for overcoming gender disparities in AI use.

Prioritising AI Literacy

AI literacy is already being prioritized by hiring managers as the number one rising skill on job applications or LinkedIn postings. Bickerstaff emphasises the importance of AI literacy for students, stating that it is something they will be expected to understand and apply in their own practice and professional aspirations.

Some districts and organizations are fully onboard with AI adoption, offering great lessons from which to learn. For instance, Chicago has made significant strides in teacher professional development, while Houston has implemented a student AI literacy course in high schools.

The Women in AI Education Community, founded in 2023, has grown to include 2,000 women across 23 time zones. The community provides virtual programming and a vibrant Slack channel focused on AI and education.

Bickerstaff expresses concern about the negative connotation of generative AI in schools, suggesting that it could be perceived as cheating and potentially discouraging young women from using it. However, she stresses the importance of understanding and embracing AI as a tool for educational advancement.
