AI Assistant Cali Breaks Language Barriers for Rural College Students

A new pilot program has launched this month in Northern California to support bilingual students in rural communities. The initiative aims to improve access to higher education by introducing an AI tool called Cali. Three colleges—Butte College, College of the Redwoods, and Lassen College—are taking part in the scheme.

The program focuses on increasing enrollment and retention rates for students facing language barriers. Cali, the AI assistant, can communicate in over 140 languages, helping students complete key forms like the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and the California Dream Act Application. By reducing errors on these documents, the tool aims to keep students on track toward graduation.

Colleges involved will also use Cali to gather real-time student feedback, giving them insights into equity and belonging on campus. The AI handles routine questions, freeing up staff to provide more personalised support. This shift is expected to lower costs and remove common enrollment obstacles.

Before adopting Cali, each institution had to establish its own approach to AI, often by forming an advisory group. The pilot reflects a broader effort to strengthen support systems for rural students while maintaining human oversight in decision-making.

The program will run at Butte College, College of the Redwoods, and Lassen College. By automating administrative tasks and offering multilingual assistance, it seeks to boost both student retention and institutional efficiency. The long-term goal is to create a more inclusive path to higher education in underserved areas.
