Abia Governor Otti Unveils Major Upgrades at State University's Convocation
Abia State Governor Alex Otti has unveiled a series of infrastructure upgrades at Abia State University in Uturu. The projects, commissioned during the institution's combined 30th to 32nd convocation ceremony, include a new power station, renovated hostels, and a fresh road construction initiative. Otti described the developments as key steps in addressing long-standing challenges in the state's education sector.
On Friday, March 27, Otti officially commissioned an upgraded 5MVA power station at the university. The facility replaces the previous 2.5MVA unit, doubling its capacity and aiming to stabilise electricity supply across the campus. He called the project the fulfilment of a promise made to the university community and highlighted its role in supporting academic activities.
The governor also laid the foundation for new male and female hostels, designed to accommodate 5,000 students. Alongside this, he unveiled three retrofitted hostel blocks—A, B, and C—providing immediate improvements to student housing. These upgrades come as part of broader efforts to enhance living conditions on campus. In addition, Otti flagged off a 1.8km internal road project within the university. The construction is expected to ease movement and improve access to key areas of the campus. During the event, he reiterated his administration's stance on consolidating Abia State University's operations, preferring to centralise resources in Uturu rather than maintain the institution's three other campuses in Umuahia, Ohafia, and Aba. Looking ahead, Otti announced plans for a dedicated 15-megawatt power line. The new infrastructure will serve not only the university but also neighbouring communities, further addressing energy shortages in the region.
The newly commissioned projects mark a significant expansion of infrastructure at Abia State University. With improved power supply, additional student housing, and upgraded roads, the institution is set to benefit from enhanced operational efficiency. The governor's plans for a larger power line suggest further developments are on the horizon.
