Aachen’s cultural shift: Library merges with Adult Education Center in 2026

Aachen’s City Library is reorganising its collections as part of a wider plan to merge with the Adult Education Center. Several key items, including a concert grand piano and a vast sheet music collection, will move to the Music School. Meanwhile, historical documents will be transferred to the City Archives for long-term preservation.

On 1 January 2026, the City Archives will take over 115,000 volumes from the library’s historical and special Aachen collections. These records will become part of the city’s central memory institution, ensuring their preservation and scholarly access. The archives will serve as the main hub for written heritage within the urban community.

The City Library has also reviewed its book collections to assess their value ahead of the planned merger. As part of this process, around 12,500 sheet music scores will be relocated to the Music School. The school will establish an internal library for teaching staff, making the scores more accessible for educational use.

Additionally, the library’s concert grand piano will be refurbished before being moved to the Music School. Once restored, it will serve as a high-quality teaching instrument. The piano’s former room in the library will then be repurposed as an event space for adult education courses.

The collaboration between the City Library, City Archives, and Music School aims to ensure the sustainable preservation and appropriate use of these collections.

The transfer of materials will see the City Archives become the central point for historical records, while the Music School gains valuable resources for teaching. The repurposed spaces and redistributed collections reflect a coordinated effort to maintain and enhance access to Aachen’s cultural and educational assets.
