A Factory Worker’s Free Evening Classes Transform Lives in Ho Chi Minh City
A factory worker in Ho Chi Minh City has spent years running free evening classes for children of migrant workers. Hoàng Trường Khánh, who once struggled himself, now helps disadvantaged students learn in a makeshift classroom. What began as a small group of four children has grown into a lively space where lessons bring hope and progress.
Khánh’s journey started in 2010 when he moved to the city after hardship at home. He found work at a veterinary medicine factory in Phước Long Ward. Years later, on an ordinary afternoon, he spotted four children studying alone by the roadside. Without hesitation, he gathered them and began teaching.
The first lessons took place outdoors in a graveyard, where Khánh used simple riddles and real-life examples to explain physics and mathematics. Neighbours soon noticed and built a small thatched shelter, giving the children a proper place to study. Over time, the classes expanded to include literature and English, drawing more students each evening. By 5.30 pm every day, the shelter fills with laughter and eager voices. Most of the children come from families of migrant workers, struggling to afford formal schooling. Khánh charges no fees, focusing instead on those who need the most help. Many students, once shy and uncertain, now show clear improvement and growing confidence. His own difficult childhood shaped this dream of teaching. Rather than profit or recognition, he finds purpose in watching the children learn and thrive.
The free classes continue to grow, offering more subjects and reaching more students each year. Children who once lacked guidance now arrive daily, ready to study and build a brighter future. Khánh’s quiet dedication has turned a simple shelter into a place where learning—and hope—flourishes.
