Mental Health Month in Canada is currently underway, with a focus on raising awareness, reducing stigma, and advocating for equitable access to mental health care. This month-long initiative highlights the importance of mental health, especially for marginalized communities such as Black, Indigenous, and People of Colour (BIPOC).

The 7-Day Mental Health Challenge, a resource available for download, is designed to support positive mental health and take less than 10 minutes a day. This practical guide offers daily practices to build resilience, create calm, and strengthen the capacity to give to others.

Day 1 encourages starting with stillness, a moment of mindfulness or stretching/yoga to set the tone for the day. Day 2 emphasizes the importance of taking a digital detox hour, helping to reduce stress and improve focus.

Day 3 encourages giving simple actions like compliments, smiles, or help, which can boost mood, reduce stress, increase feelings of connection and purpose, and lower cortisol levels. Day 4 focuses on journaling for 5-10 minutes, a practice that can improve emotional stability and overall well-being by releasing what's inside.

Day 5 introduces movement, such as stretching, dancing, or walking, which helps regulate emotions and lower anxiety. Day 6 encourages reflection and resetting, a chance to identify what felt good and what to carry forward, supporting mental well-being. Day 7 concludes with a reminder to practice self-compassion, recognizing common humanity and combating self-judgment and feelings of isolation.

Mental health is defined as a state of well-being that enables one to cope with normal stresses of life, work productively, and contribute to their community. Maintaining positive mental health involves self-compassion, social-emotional skills, mindfulness meditation, and holistic stress management routines incorporating physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being strategies.

Remember, seeking help for mental health issues does not imply that something is "wrong" with you. Mental illness refers to diagnosed conditions that affect a person's thinking, feeling, mood, or behavior, such as depression, anxiety disorders, or bipolar disorder.
