40,000 evacuated as overheated chemical tank threatens Southern California
A damaged chemical tank in Southern California has forced 40,000 residents to evacuate their homes. Authorities are now working to prevent a potential leak or explosion from the overheated container. The situation has prompted a state of emergency in Orange County. The incident began when a pressurized tank at GKN Aerospace overheated and started releasing vapours. The container, holding between 6,000 and 7,000 gallons of methyl methacrylate, has malfunctioning valves that are either broken or blocked. This has made it impossible to relieve pressure or safely remove the chemical.
Firefighters have focused on cooling the tank to reduce the risk of leakage or an explosion. Methyl methacrylate exposure can cause severe health issues, including breathing difficulties, neurological effects, and irritation to the skin, eyes, and throat. Despite the danger, no injuries have been reported so far. The evacuation order covers a large area, including parts of Garden Grove, a city neighbouring Anaheim—home to Disneyland, which remained unaffected. Governor Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency to free up state resources for the response. GKN Aerospace, the company responsible for the tank, previously agreed to pay over $900,000 in 2025 to settle earlier violations related to recordkeeping, permitting, and nitrogen oxide emissions.
Residents remain displaced with no clear timeline for returning home. The damaged tank continues to pose risks, and emergency crews are maintaining efforts to stabilise the situation. State and local agencies are coordinating to manage the ongoing threat and support affected communities.
