His Appeal Becomes the Motto of a Competition - 2026 History Award Adopts ‘Be Human!’ as Its Powerful New Motto

The 2026 History Award has announced its new motto: 'Be Human!'—a phrase first spoken by sports journalist Marcel Reif during a memorial event for victims of National Socialism. The competition, open to students across Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, will now accept registrations until January 31, 2026, with film submissions due by March 1 of the same year.

The award, held annually since 2005, selects a fresh theme each year. This time, organisers chose Reif’s call to humanity, originally delivered on January 31, 2024, in the Bundestag. Reif himself has been named patron of the 2026 edition, sharing the role with influencer Melina Hoischen, widely known as 'Miss History'.

The 2026 History Award will focus on themes of empathy and historical reflection, guided by its new motto. With Reif and Hoischen as patrons, the event aims to engage young people in examining the past through film. Final entries must be submitted by the March 1 deadline.
